1. How does Astrion’s upscaling process work?

We currently work in a traditional post production services vendor model. Simply provide us with your digitized video masters in a supported media format, and we will upscale those and give them back to you. We are also happy to discuss workflow integrations with customers that have sufficient volume or regular ongoing work. Just contact us!

2. How does Astrion’s pricing work?

We price by the frame based on the desired output resolution, combined with the total volume of content that requires upscaling. Higher volumes result in lower per-frame pricing. There is a minimum charge for extremely short content. Simply contact us to discuss your needs.

3. What resolutions does Astrion support?

We officially support a minimum of 1280x720 for input, but we have seen good results upscaling high quality imagery from lower resolutions. We support output of HD (1920x1080), 4K/UHD (3840x2160), 8K (7680x4320), and 16K (15360x8640), as well as 2x and 3x upscaling multiples of whatever source resolution you can provide. If you need support for a specific resolution not listed here, simply contact us and let’s chat about your needs.

4. What frame rates does Astrion support?

We support all standard progressive and interlaced frame rates (23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94, 60). All outputs are progressive. If you need support for a specific frame rate not listed here, simply contact us and let’s chat about your needs.

5. What file formats does Astrion support?

We currently support ProRes 422 (or better), as well as DPX and EXR file sequences. We output the same format we are given, and simply pass any audio tracks through to the upscaled output. We preserve the color and color space of the original, from rec709 to ACES. If you require support for a format not listed here, just contact us and let’s chat about your needs.

6. Can Astrion upscale my low-resolution, soft, compressed video with visible noise, artifacts, interlacing issues, etc. to native-resolution HD or 4K?

  • While we do consider ourselves image wizards, there are some things that are just not possible with current technology. Astrion's ML models are optimized for professionally captured HD-resolution (or higher) images. They preserve the creative intent of the original imagery, which is important for M&E professionals. Soft, noisy, or artifacted video will be upscaled while preserving these features as they are in keeping with the original creative intent.

  • In scenarios with ideal standard-definition footage as the source, reasonable upscaled HD is possible, but convincing 4K is not. If your images simply require a bit of restoration, we are happy to recommend a few vendors, as we do not handle restoration ourselves. Finally, please note that with extremely soft or low-detail content, upscaling with our technology will provide little to no benefit, regardless of how much restoration is applied (apologies to your family's heavily compressed flip-phone videos and soft and grainy 8 mm home movies).
